I have a slight midline shift between my upper and lower teeth will braces work

Q. I currently have braces for my upper arch only due to financial issues. I have a slight mid-line discrepancy between both arches. After the top braces are removed and my finances permit, I would like to know if this mid-line discrepancy can be fixed by braces on the lower arch only? Thanks.

A. If the midline discrepancy is slight – in my opinion this does not warrant further orthodontic work as the cost/benefit factor may not warrant it – if you are happy with your new smile no-one is going to notice the midlines – I would venture that 90% of the population have a slight discrepancy

I am currently wearing both upper and lower braces due to overcrowded lower jaw and a cross-bite. I have had a tooth extraction on the right side of my lower jaw to make space for other teeth to align properly. But due to the fact that I had a tooth extraction only on one side, my concern is that my lower teeth will move towards the right thus creating a midline discrepancy. My doctor says it’s not to worry because my upper jaw midline is just fine and the lower one is usually unnoticeable. But if later during my braces treatment I notice that I am not happy with the discrepancy, they could extract another lower tooth on the left side to even things out.
Would you suggest the additional tooth extraction or do you agree that the lower jaw midline is not as important?

Hello,

My daughter had narrow upper jaw, class III malocclusion, crowding, and posterior open bite. After two years of braces all the problems seem fixed. My daughter is happy with the way she bites.

The only problem left before removing the braces is a midline discrepancy, about 2 mm. The upper jaw is aligned with the middle of the nose but the lower jaw is not.

The orthodontist asked my daughter to wear the elastics in a certain position and warned her to stop if the jaws shift the other way. After a few nights she couldn’t bite properly so she stopped using the elastics. She went back to the office and notified the orthodontist about the problem. After 30 sec he said that her bite and smile are beautiful and she should not wear any elastics until next week when he plans to remove the braces. He did not address the midline discrepancy.

Is this reasonable after two years of treatment?
Thank you very much,
Tania
