I have a sensitive tooth. Should I have it removed?

Q.
I have tooth that has become very sensitive to hot and cold.
my dentist has suggested I rub sensodyne toothpaste.
How long should I continue this as if this does not work she has suggested I have deep root filing to have the nerve removed.
I had terrible experience some years ago when another dentist tried a similar thing and I experieced excrusiating pain.
Because of this i am more inclined to have the tooth removed.
Do you have any advice and are some aneathestics more effective than others?
A.
If the tooth can be saved by root canal treatment it is much better as having the tooth removed may remove the pain but you may get other problems later due to the gap. There are srong medications available to remove pain we use several types of anaesthetic and you could have sedation if you are very nervous.
