I have a query concerning filling.

Q. I have a query concerning filling. I have 10 silver filling put in over the last 10 years (I’m 27) but I am concerned about the safety of them – due to the mercury – and I’m thinking about getting them replaced with white filling which I believe do not contain any mercury. Is this a sensible thing to do, or in your opinion unnecessary? Does removing old filling and replacing them with white ones present any problems in itself which I should be aware of? Many Thanks

A. There is no research to back the removal of amalgam fillings because of a theoretical risk of amalgam poisoning.  There are rare cases of allergy to mercury.  If you do decide to have them removed there can be problems with standard plastic white fillings( composites) if the cavity is large.  These may need to have porcelain fillings ( or possibly gold) for long term stability.
