You should look for a local dentist who offers treatment for nervous patients including sedation.

Hello, Myself and my wife both have the same problem, we both badly need dental treatment and we are both as petrified as each other about visiting the dentist. However, it has got to a point where we both know we need to dosomething about it. As well as the fear of the pain in dentist work, we areboth very scared of the cost. Between us we are in a very low income household and like everyone else in the current climate have debts to pay already. Is free dental treatment available for us on the NHS or privateonly? If private, what are the costs involved and would we be able to set up a payment plan? We would both be interested in going down the dental sedation route as we feel it’s the only way we can ever face getting treatmentdone. Any advice would be very much appreciated, and a quote if necessary?

I am a 40 yr old woman who has not visited a dentist for over 13 years. According to the BDA website your practice offers facilities for treating phobic patients. Could you let me know what services you offer and consultation/treatment prices? I have a discoloured top molar which is now beginning togive me some mild to moderate discomfort, and I suspect, due to the time that has passed without dental check-ups, a range of other issues. I look forward to hearing from you.

I currently have an NHS dentist in Edinburgh, however at my last check up,I discovered I needed a couple of fillings and possibly my wisdom tooth taken out as it keeps flaring up. I am an extremely nervous patient and although I tried to have the filling, he had to stop leaving in a temp filling. Ireally need to have this dental work done privately – but my nerves make it impossible to continue with my NHS dentist – and I really don’t feel that an injection numbs me enough. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks,

Hi, I would like to find out more about having dental treatment while sedated. I’m 22, and in the past 10 years I’ve been to the dentist twice, andthat was to remove 2 molars that were causing me pain. I doubt I would’veeven went if they weren’t so painful. I had a horrible visit when I was around 12 where the dentist was really insensitive to the pain I felt duringa procedure and ever since I’ve struggled to go back. I need quite a few fillings and I’m terrified that my teeth will fall out soon if I don’t getmy act together and go to the dentist. However I find myself on the vergeof tears any time I’m near my usual practice and I’m generally extremelyupset around the dentists there, even though the dentist who wasn’t so nice no longer works there. I just can’t fight the urge to cry when I hear the drill or smell the mouthwash or feel the seat move! It’s horrible. I’ma student so part of the worry is I need so much done that I can’t affordit. But I’m becoming so embarrassed about the state of my teeth I can’t allow myself to neglect it for longer. Thanks

Hi there, I need some work done on my teeth but I’m seriously, seriously phobic about the dentist. I’m looking for someone who will be able to do aproper assessment and one treatment to sort all of it out. I don’t want tocome in for more than two visits. And none of the anesthetic ever works onme. I believe I have two fillings needed in my wisdom teeth and I’ve gotsome pain in a filling which was half done about 6 months ago due to the anaesthetic wearing off. Ideally I’d like to just be knocked out but the Dental School won’t do it, and my own dentist couldn’t get a vein in to do sedation. Is this something you could help with?

Even just sitting in the dentist chair makes me sweat and get very uptight and nervous. Hi No there isn’t ,but a variation of that would be to write the dentist you are going to see an e- mail before the appointment .If you feel so afraid that you cant communicate that well , tell the reception staff when you book the appointment . If a practice doesn’t respond to this then they may not be the right one for you ,

July 11th, 2011 at 08:47 PM
Jaylin Says :

hello dentists see people on warfarin quite a bit these days . They are trained to know what is needed . However it depends what treatment you need as to what the warfarin regime has to be for that particular procedure . The dentist will ask you to check with your DR or clinic what is advised for you. Its not always necessary to change your warfarin regime depending on your INR immediately preceding the treatment . However I emphasise the regime must be decided between your own healthcare providers .

I am a 44yr old man who is tremendously worried about the state of his teeth, and of dentists.
As a child my dentist use to fill me with fear. Whenever i needed a filling he would never give any kind of anaesthetic, and i still have this vivid picture in my mind of tears running down my cheeks!

Anyway, this has lead to me staying away from my dentist, and i am now at the stage where i know i have got to face my fear.

I am a professional person, and cannot understand why i can’t just pull myself together and sort it out.
I guess i am now at a stage where i am ashamed. I fear being judged, but also fear losing my teeth.

On the face of it, my front teeth look ok, but beyond that i have problems.
I just wish i could find someone who understands, and would not judge me, and just click their fingers and everyhting would be ok!

Finding this forum, i have read posts from people who have similar concerns, so it made me feel as if i could communicate.

Anybody that can help, will be warmly received.

Dear Enquirer, Please don’t worry…you do need to see a dentist urgently, so there is still hope that they will be able to save your teeth. If you are nervous you can find a dentist who can do your treatment while you are gently sedated. Firstly you need a dental examination and xrays taken to see what needs to be done.

The first step is going in and actually seeeing what you need which you have done, ask your dentist to explain each step maybe have one filling done first so you can get the confidence, if you really feel you can not cope you can have sedation.

My 21 year old daughter has one gap in her upper jaw where there was no tooth present. She is unsure whether to have a bridge fitted or to have an implant? We know that bridges do not last for ever and may possibly damage the teeth on either side. Teeth can be brittle after they have been root filled and had lots of tooth lost . However if its infected and has a sinus tract then that can make it easier to get out , The infection makes the bone around it softer and a bit spongy . I hope this is the case for you and you will be fine

Do you not do sedation that puts you to sleep? My phobia is so bad i cant even sit in the chair

February 11th, 2013 at 08:47 PM
Jeanette Says :

Before you can explore having sedation you need to be able to sit in the chair and let a dentist have a look . Its possible to have sedation where you are unaware of what is happening although not a General anaesthetic . If you need to have teeth extracted you could ask to be referred to a hospital to be completely asleep if nothing else is possible . Have a look at http://www.dentalfearcentral.org for some advice on how to get started by finding a dentist ,making an appointment , getting there and allowing the dentist to look . Its important to tell them how scared you are Hope this helps

I am so stressed by it all. Do you possibly know of anyone in my area(Solihull, West Midlands), who could help me. Thank you. i hope you could help me.

You’ve made the first step to getting help for this problem . You dont say whether you want to have an NHS dentist or a Private one . I cant recommened an individual dentist , but have a look at http://www.dentalfearcentral.org to see who other patients have had good experiences with in your area

Hi there I’m scared of the dentist and my teeth have rotted really bad due to having a child at a young age the dentist told me he will take them out i don’t visibly have a infection but I’m just a bit worried as people have said that you can get blood poisoning ?

Humberto Says :

Yes its possible to get septicaemia from rotten teeth , although highly unlikely . You will probably get some infections in one or other teeth from time to time . Have you thought about looking for a dentist who could take them out under sedation for you ?

How can I find out where I can get IV sedation for root canal work on the NHS? My local hospital dentist won’t do it. Can it be done on the NHS? I live in the Western Isles but I’m prepared to be referred anywhere! Thanks

Its possible to get IV sedation for root canal work privately . On the NHS it may be impossible . A lot depends on the tooth which needs it , and finding a dentist who would be willing to do such work under sedation . You may be able to find someone in Glasgow or Edinburgh

Melina Says :

The most striking statistic is that 11 % of the population cannot go to the dentist because of severe dental phobia , thats a huge number of people , A further 25 % avoid it unless in pain due to dental anxiety .

Bruce Says :

You don’t have to go to sleep to have your teeth out . In fact most people don’t . You have the tooth numbed with an injection .If you are very afraid then its possible to have some sedative medication to help with the anxious feelings . If you are really too scared to go through with that then you could ask to be referred for Iv sedation , where you are not aware of whats happening but not asleep and its safe .

I have a fear of dentists – always have. When I was younger every time i went to see a dentist he pulled a tooth. My back teeth have all been pulled except four which are rotten, painful and are completely into the bone. I have bleeding gums. Since i have no back teeth the dentist said my front teeth have been doing the chewing that the back teeth should be doing. Since that’s been happening it’s worn down the enamel in the front and now i have a cracked front tooth that he said will need a pin in it to hold the tooth in place. He also said i will need two partial bottom plates but he will need to put something in the gums to hold these plates in place. I am 62 yrs old and very nervous, afraid of a dentist or anyone putting needles in my mouth etc etc. I know your supposed to keep your teeth as long as you can, but since I’m having these issues is it better to have them all out and have a top full plate and a partial bottom plate which was also discussed by the dentist. Either way are there any hospitals in London Ontario that would do this with me being sedated. I’m also very concerned with the cost as I live on a canada pension disability.
