I had brace work at 10 but my front teeth stick out, what can I do?

Q.
Hello,

I had braces when i was 10 for 3 years! Unfortuantly they didn’t take any teeth out and now my front two teeth stick out and the gums have start to receed, i also suffer with grinding my teeth at night which has caused the back one’s much problems (i have been doing it since my grandad died when i was 15) and now my dentist wants to take one out as it’s causing me so much pain. The thing is i do not want it out as i am worried they will go even more wonky and cause me even more trouble, i can not afford braces as i am a single mum (I am working but still not alot of spare cash) is there any chance that i would be able to get some sort of insurance so i can claim for the braces or would the NHS do it for free seeing as they made the mistake in the first place? BTW i am now 24.

Thank you

Thank you for your enquiry.

Unfortunately most insurance companies do not cover orthodontic work. You could visit an NHS dentist and find out if you can get a referral to an NHS orthodontist.

If you grind your teeth, I would suggest you get a night guard made to wear when you are sleeping to avoid any further damage to your teeth.

When you have teeth removed, the remaining teeth do move slightly and you do need to understand this, however, how much it moves depends on which tooth it is. The dentist could advise you better on how much impact this would make.
