I am worried that my son’s teeth will not develop correctly in the future, what should I do?

Q.
hello,

my 9 year old son got tripped over at school today when he was running and fell on the school playground and hit his face onto the ground and broke a few of the teeths at the front, the front top 2 tooths were broken in half with sharp egdes and a couple below has small pieces broken off too.
i took him to the dentist straight away but had to wait 2-3 hours to be seen and they have placed some tempory filling and also some cream on where his nerves are exposed behind 1 of the front teeth.
they have booked him in again in 2 weeks time for fillings.
will this effect his damaged teeths in future?
will the filling break off and will he need to change his teeths when he gets older as he’s only 9 years old now.
i am very worried, please advise me!

best regards.

It’s very natural to be concerned when an accident ot the teeth happens like this – it is quite common in children and very often happens in the school playground.

It sounds like the dentists have done a good job of helping your son. It is correct to repair the teeth with some bonding at this stage and wait and see what happens to the nerves of his teeth. They may recover or they may not and so the possibility of him requiring root canal treatment must be kept in mind. At 9 years old he has a very good chance they will heal however.

In the long term he certainly will need further treatment on his front teeth. The bonding will have to be replaced, possibly several times until his late teens, and when he reaches adulthood he may end up with some veneers or crowns on these teeth. At this stage it’s very difficult to say what will happen and of course I do not have the privilege of seeing the extent of the damage to his teeth so I am just speculating.

Please take some time to talk to the dentist who is carrying out his treatment and he or she can advise you further. I hope this helps reduce your concerns I am sure he is in good hands

Best wishes

Mark
