I am due to have a crown fitted but I am suffering from pain in the tooth nerve. Should I have root canal treatment?

Q. One of my back teeth has recently git damaged and I was told by my dentist that I would need a crown. He sprayed the back tooth to see if the nerve was still active, and I nearly hit the roof as it was so painful, my dentist said he had to do that to see if the nerve was ok. My dentist has ground down the tooth ready for the crown, and Im due to have the crown fitted on Friday, but since yesterday I have had cronic pain around that tooth, it feels very nervy and painful, should I have had a root canal? and will it be ok to just add a crown over the nerve? Id hate to have a crown fitted and then suffer with this pain. Thanks,
A. It can be quite normal to get sensitivity/pain whlst you have a temporary crown fitted this is due to it not being a accurate fit. Once you have you the permanent crown fitted this will hopefully resolve your problem. Your dentist may choose to fit the crown with a temporary cement just until the tooth has fully settled down. I wouldn’t rush into having a root canal filling see if the tooth settles down with the permanent crown.
