How long will my child’s jaw be sore for when the surgeon breaks it in preparation for a brace?

i have a 15 year old child that lives with me he needs to have a brace on his teeth but has been told he needs his jaw broke first he would like to know how this is done and how long it will be sore fore and will he be able to eat
