how long does a root canal last

Q. Hello Doc, thanks for the good work done here, l really appreciate, l would like to ask how long will a tooth whose root canal has been cut last when its still in its good shape? my other question is would aroot canal surgery affect the success of an implant. and finally if l got an implant how long do l expect to stay with it. thank you.

A. When a tooth is root filled it usually needs a crown or something similar if it is a back tooth to prevent it splitting.  Front teeth can usually be restored by white fillings unless they are very broken down or are unaesthetic.  Root treatment should not effect implant placement provided there is no abscess adjacent to the implant site.  The success rate of implants depends on the type of bone, in the ara nad any underlying medical problems etc.  Usually the success rate of implants is in the 90-95% region over 5 years.
