How does the dentist get rid of the abscess if there is no tooth to remove?

Q. hello recently i got knocked in the face and 2 teeth at the back got knocked out – a abscess has now formed which has made my face swell up badly. ive been to the doctors for antibiotics but trying to find a dentist. How does the dentist get rid of the abscess if there is no tooth to remove?,
A. It is posible that the crown at the top of the tooth was knocked out but the roots are still in the jawbone and have become infected. You should see a dentist to get this checked out and if infected roots are present, they should be removed. Hope this helps Rob
