How can I keep teeth healthy and free of gum disease?

Q.
Andrew, as a dentist, what is your ultimate advice and tips to keeping teeth healthy and free of gum disease? Can you really prevent it entirely and do any health factors (ie strength of immune system) have anything to do with it?

Also, should we clean our teeth in warm or cold water? I’ve been using warm (as i’m told it softens tooth bristles and kills bacteria) but is this the correct way?

Many thanks!

A.
as a general rule brushing 2/3 times daily, perhaps with a good quality electric brush and regular flossing and use of interdental brushes such as Tepe brushes is the mainstay of good oral health. This needs to be coupled with regular visits with your hygienist and a good balanced diet with minimal sugar intake. Not sure the temperature of water makes much difference
