flap connecting upper lip and gum hurts

Q. I have a little girl who is almost 5. She is complaining of her “teeth hurting” but points to the flap of skin directly above her two front teeth. It is the “flap” that connects from under the top lip to the top gum line above the teeth. Hers is very long and is obviously beginning to bother her. Is this something that a regular dentist can handle? How is this corrected/treated? Thank you!

A. It may be a muscle attatchment called the labial fraenum. A regular dentist can asses this.

My son had an accident at school and has a cut or gash in the flap that connects the inside of the upper lip to his gums. We rinsed his mouth with warm salt water but the bleeding is still off and on. Does he need stitches or will this heal itself. He is 8 years old.
