Do I need extraction orthodontics for forward front teeth gaps ?

Q. I am 24 years old. I have space between the forward teeth, they are forwardly placed as well.Is it necessary to get removed teeth for orthodontics treatment ? D

A. Hi D,

The problem you mention is very common, whilst I cannot say for certain without a clinical examination, if you have spacing present, then you should not need to have teeth removed just to correct the gap at the front.

Removal of teeth will probably be aimed at correcting something else, however recently orthodontics has advanced to allow for teeth to be moved without the need to extract, and now teeth are only removed in the most severe cases.

Please, please advise(A concerned mother)

My daughter has been on the waiting list for braces for quite a while and finally had her appointment last week. Her mouth is overcrowded but not severely so, however her Orthodontist has requested 4 teeth to be extracted prior to her brace being fitted. 2 at the top and two at the bottom. I did not question this at the time as obviously he knows what he is doing. Since then though (and this is when It seems a little knowledge can be a bad thing), I have read that extracting teeth can cause a dished in look and alter facial features. Also, the length of the face is altered and lips become thinned! My daughter has lovely features and bone structure with quite full lips and now this has left me worried as it is down to me to make the decision as to what to do next. She is almost 15, and the teeth to be removed are the premolars (The ones after the pointed teeth, incase I’m wrong about the name)
This Orthodontist is a well respected one and I don’t want to appear to be questioning him before treatment has even begun. Can you please give me some advice.

Don’t do it!

It will ruin her face long term. I should know I had four premolars removed and have had a life of hell ever since. Ignore your orthodontist. His decision is merited on what is best for him not for your daughter. Please don’t do it!
