I have a grey vertical line on my front tooth that I’m a bit worried about

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q.
Dear Rob I know this may not be exactly your speciality but I have a grey vertical line on my front tooth that I’m a bit worried about. One dentist has told me that it’s nothing, a natural feature of enamel (or something along those lines!) and another dentist said that it might need root treating in the future. Obviously this second opinion has scared me a bit. I do sometimes feel a tingling sensation in the tooth but it is *never* sensitive to hot/cold or touch of any kind. I think the line was caused by clenching my teeth at night and I’m now looking at getting a night guard. Could you let me know what these vertical grey lines tend to be and whether treatment or cosmetic improvement is necessary? Best wishes,

I will not be able to be fitted for dentures due to the excessive bone loss

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q.
I am 48 years old, and have been progressively losing my bottom teeth. I have been examined by a total of six dentist, who claim that it is a combination of genetics and environment. According to these dentist, I will not be able to be fitted for dentures due to the excessive bone loss. Dentures are the only affordable option for me, as I do not have any health insurance at the moment. I am presently a college student, and soon will need to go out for an internship position, but I will not be able to due to my oral situation.

After the underbite correction with braces the midline is off

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q.
My daughter is 18, she originally had braces to straight her teeth. Last year she was braced again in preparation for surgery LeFort I to correct an underbite. All has gone well except her midline is off, 4 or 5 mm. The orthodontist says it is fine and won’t do anything. My daughter is so depressed. She hates this worse than the underbite. Is there anything we can do? Please give me some advice, after all she has been through, three years in braces and difficult surgery she won’t smile and cries all the times.

I would like to know, ideally how long after tooth extraction should implant procedure be performed?

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q.
I recently had my 1st upper premolar removed after it broke and was unable to be restored. What I would like to know is as follows. (1) Is it normal for the adjacent canine tooth to feel a little numb following extraction? (2) Is it normal for me to feel this canine tooth resting on my upper lip much more, following the removal of the first premolar? I assumed that this is because there is no longer a premolar there to fill out that side of my mouth. (3) During the healing process is it normal for the gum to look white where the tooth was extracted? I am due to return to the dentist in a couple of weeks for a check up, but I am unsure as to which tooth restoration method would be best for me. And would very much appreciate if you could advise me on this matter. I am not keen on having a bridge to replace this tooth because the 2nd upper premolar next to the one that was removed has already been restored with a filling. Neither do I want to grind my canine tooth down in order to place a crown on it in preparation for a bridge. I am also unsure about how a partial denture works, but I do know that I prefer not to choose a restorative treatment that will detrimentally compromise the health of the adjacent teeth to the one that was removed. I have heard about dental implants but considering that I had the tooth removed very recently. I would like to know, ideally how long after tooth extraction should this procedure be performed? This is in consideration of potential bone loss and the healing process following tooth extraction. Although I prefer the option of a single dental implant, my main concern is the cost of this procedure. Due to a low income, what I would like to know is what would you advice would you give me in terms of researching this option considering my financial circumstances. I have heard that some dental schools offer this treatment at a reduced price but I am weary of the amount of expertise and experience these dentists will have in performing this procedure. Currently residing in the East Midlands, UK I am unsure as to whom I could be referred to with regards to this form of restorative treatment. I would ideally like to be referred to someone either in the East Midlands or London area who won’t charge me extortionate prices or who allows you to pay for the treatment gradually or on some type of dental plan. I am also unsure if dental implants are available on the NHS to someone in my circumstances. If it isn’t available on the NHS, could you please tell me on average how much the full course of dental implant treatment would cost on this tooth? I would be very grateful if you could advise me as to what my best course of restorative treatment would be in your opinion. As well as recommend someone that you find to be a trusted, qualified and very experienced dental implant surgeon to me if this form of dental restoration treatment does turn out to be an option for me. Many thanks for your help

Is there a way to grind or shorten the finished dentures after being fit

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q.
Hello. I just got my new dentures (It took them 5 months to get them even close to what I had before.)My smile is so different now, because the top teeth are slightly “long”. I always had “shorter” teeth.I am now completely self-concious and used to be known for a huge, pretty smile. Is there a way to grind or shorten the finished dentures after the fact? Thank you for any suggestions.

Is Implants the way to go for me?

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q.
My front teeth are both crowns on posts. The right snapped and was replaced with crown on a peg/pin. This came loose after 2 days and fell out. After a period of 2 months and 6 refits I was advised that the root had been damaged when drilled and the crown would not work. The root was removed and a denture fitted (also with upper left 4 – which was lost some 10 years ago) The denture is loose and does not stay in place – I am told this is partialy due to a ‘tauris’ pallett. I have had a consultation with an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon re implants. Price quoted between £4 and £4500. However no correspondence confirming procedure, treatment, costs or after-care is forthcoming. Is this normal procedure and should I proceed.

My question is, there are many cosmetic dentists in my area (Solihull, West Midlands) but I don’t know who to go to for the best treatment, can you advise please?

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q.
I have a tooth missing next to my top 2 front teeth. I had a tooth on a plate to fill the gap but hate it and only wear it when I go outdoors. I have decided the answer would be to have a dental implant providing this can be carried out following x rays on the bone etc. My question is, there are many cosmetic dentists in my area (Solihull, West Midlands) but I don’t know who to go to for the best treatment, can you advise please? Thankyou ..
