Should the entire body be scanned before having the dental treatment?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009
Q.
I recently visited an NHS dentist as an old crown had come off (root filling still intact), also the outer side of my left upper back tooth had snapped off on its outer side. He advised me that the crowned tooth had decay below the gum line, making it unsuitable for another crown to be fitted. He explained that my options were to either have an extraction, or have the tooth sealed off at gum level. I explained that I was anxious not to have another gap left (I already have one missing tooth due to it breaking down at root level which puts strain on the gum and two teeth either side)and enquired about a bridge being fitted. However, on asking this he appeared evasive and uninterested, stating that because it was a back tooth there was no real need for a bridge, that this would be purely for cosmetic reasons. Am I entitled to bridgework under the NHS? When I mentioned that I would assist by paying privately, he seemed more interested. I have read up on implantology as I have considered this as an alternative. I understand that this involves a CT scan. Could you explain whether the entire body is scanned or is it limited to the area in which the work would be carried out?

The gums has never grown over the bridge so its receeding advice

Monday, December 21st, 2009
Q.
I had 2 crowns fitted on my 2 front teeth about 20 years ago, over the years they were forever falling out and i had to have them replaced, the last time they fell out, which was 2 years ago, i went to the dentist who said that he couldnt replace one of them because one of the roots had rotted and he didnt have anything for the crown to hold on to so he advised i have a bridge, it was a bridge with the 2 teeth together and they were attached onto the tooth of which the root was still ok, they look ok but on the tooth where there is no root the gum has never grown over the bridge so its receeding and looking black, is there any advice you could give me, thanks

When fitted the Bridge rocks from the anchor to the front teeth is it normal

Friday, December 18th, 2009
Q.
Hi, im getting a bridge put in my mouth, but during fitting, the bridge rocks from the anchor to the front teeth. forgive the non tech terms but from canine to one past canine top teeth. is this normal during fitting? he’s assuring me that will be fine by cementing them. this is the 3rd bridge he’s tried to give me, the first 2 one didn’t fit, the other wasn’t at all what we talked about, or even close to the first bridge in shape. i also needed him to make the teeth slightly thicker in the front two teeth for a more solid occlusion. i could barely bite my nails! what should i tell my dr?

After root treatments one of my tooth has gone loose and about to break off

Friday, December 18th, 2009
Q.
Just after 4 years after root treatments on my discoloured Front right no 1 tooth has gone loose about to break off. Went to my usual nhs dentist who offered no important info, paid to visit expensive cosmetic dentist who done digital x-ray n told me its worst poss fracture of tooth said he would not crown it as he thinks its unethical. Im a nurse practitoner and not daft when it comes to x-rays and treatments. Basically looks like an oblique fracture quite far into root. NHS dentist has aquacelled or whatever meantime but cant see me again for temp crown till 22 Dec! Looking for informed info into implant cos as a nurse i simply cant afford to pay up £3000 unless this is my only or main option. looking for advice asap please. Thank you. Oh and cant be off work for vanity reasons already been off today! Need proper solution pronto. Thank you.

What can I do to replace my bridge so that teeth either side are not disclosed

Friday, December 18th, 2009
Q.
Hi I currently have a bridge at the front which was done about 7 years ago, however it was done with a metal backing which means the teeth either side are discoloured as the metal shows through. What can I do to replace the bridge so that the teeth either side are not disclosed. Could I get a new bridge on the NHS if so do they only usually do them with a metal backing? Many thanks for your help. Kind regards

Can my previous bridges be reused?

Friday, November 27th, 2009
Q.
I lost 3 front teeth in an auto accident 16 years ago. At that time the dentist made crowns for adjoining 5 teeth in the form of a bridge. The bridge has now let go due to decay of (what used to be) healthy natural teeth and I am wanting implants. In this day and age of recycling, reusing and renewing, can my bridge not be retro-fitted for the implants??? Alot of $$$ went into them originally, I find it hard to believe that they cannot be reused.
