Can amalgam fillings be replaced with composite fillings?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Q.
In my most recent dentist visit, my dentist had replaced several of my silver amalgam fillings with composite ones (not sure which exact type but it did involve UV light and some sort of bonding agent). One of the teeth was a Molar with pretty big cavity the filling covered most of the top of the tooth/chewing surface). Afterwards, I read online that specifically for Molars and certain cavities (not sure which ones) composite fillings are recommended less than silver (amalgam) ones due to increased problems with leakage, less longetivity (about 5 yrs less than amalgam), and if compromised higher chances of having to do a root canal to fix it. At the same time, I am pretty sure he used the most recent version of composite filling used in US – because he just recently started using it and was REALLY proud of it. So the material was the latest version, not sure about his technique though since its my first experience with this particular filling method. This made me concerned, since the cavity I had was pretty deep and another dentist (couple of years back) warned me that next time I might have to do a root canal because of the depth of the cavity. My question is was my current dentist right in replacing my old amalgam fillings for a big cavity in my molar – the cavity was at the top of the tooth (chewing surface) with composite fillings instead of using silver amalgam again?

Could you please advise me on smile makeovers?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Q.
Hi there Justin, i could really use some good advice. I am hoping you can help me, my dilema is this…….. a good few years ago my dad who is a dentist put in 3 crowns on my incisors and my left lateral incisor and then a gap appeared between my 2 front teeth. I am a proffesional singer and my smile is everything to me so i was livid ! so i went to see a cosmetic surgeon near by and i have paid out a hell of alot of money to have my top 10 teeth done properly. This was september last year and i still have yet another wax up in !!! i have been 5 times to visit the lab to go over shape and size and there every time i take photots of teeth i like the look of and go over and over the shape but they cant seem to get it ? I am starting to get phobic of going back and having yet more injections and more wax up smashed out of my mouth its getting very frustrating and now one of the laterals is getting very tender and looks like a root canal might be in order. anyway the look i am going for is similer to katie prices l.a.a smile but my mouth is alot smaller and i have a small arch apparently ? so putting teeth the same size as hers just makes me look like a horse so i need get this sorted as its driving me crackers. My dentist seems insistent on using the same technition but said if all else fails he will go to the da vinci labs. I am thinking of saying its gone on long enough and to go to da vinci. what do you think ? any advice would be valuble to me. kind regards.

What procedure to be followed for smile makeover?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Q.
I have seen a cosmetic dentist with a view to smile makeover. Treatment consists of old crown replacements and also a Bridge. For the Bridge I need to have a molar extracted. The teeth either side of it are old crowns. One of these teeth has infection in root and needs root canal treatment. I will be having diagnostic wax-up for the treatment. In your opinion in what order would you do the treatment. i.e. extraction first, root canal, wax-up etc. What proceedure would you follow. Thank you.

What would be the rough estimated cost of cosmetic surgery?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Q.
Hello, I am thinking of undergoing cosmetic surgery but I want to get a rought estimate of the cost. I have many health problems which have affected my teeth. From a young age, I am on calcium replacement and because of this condition, from a young age, it has affected my teeth really badly. The surface of my teeth is really rigid, they are also chipped in places and look worn out. There is also discolouration and regardless of how many times i brush them and use mouthwash, it has not chhanged in appearance. My gums also tend to bleed a lot, during brushing.. What are the treatments that I woud hav to undergo, how much on average would they cost and how long would they last for? I will be looking forward to hearing from you. Regards..

How long I need to wait to replace bonding after whitening?

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Q.
I have bonding, approx. 12 years old, on my two front teeth which are stained yellow. I am going to do an at-home whitening system. Do I need to wait 2 weeks after I’ve totally completed the whitening before I have the bonding replaced ? Thus, do I need to wait in order for my teeth to fully absorb & change color to the final “whiteness” in order to accurately match the bonding to the new white? Also, I’ve been told that I cannot do the ZOOM in office whitening because I have extremely sensitive teeth. Is this true as well?

Could I get Inman Aligners after having veneer treatment.Plz suggest

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Q.
Dear Dr Glaister, My top row of teeth are neat but the two front teeth stick out and they are longer than I would like. I was wondering: – is it possible to get teeth trimmed and to what extent (e.g. is it only the enamel part that can be trimmed?). Would it be necessary to have veneers fitted on the trimmed teeth – Could I get Inman Aligners even after having veneer treatment already? Many thanks and best regards

Can the procedure of implant be cheaper.Plz suggest

Sunday, October 11th, 2009
Q.
I recently had my front tooth extracted about 8 months ago because when I was a child a root canal was done on my tooth incorrectly. After different techniques and surgery my dentist said the tooth couldn’t be saved because it was to far gone. I was laid off my job and lost my insurance. I currently have a fake pull out tooth that I hate! I hide it from my husband and family because I am embarassed. I can’t afford to continue the procedure for an implant. What can I do? Is there any information you can give me to help me? Thank you.
