Home teeth whitening kit has left my teeth blotchy. What could this be?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011
Q.

I recently purchased teeth whitening from my dentist. I had custom trays and was informed to bleach overnight. after a couple of days my normally even teeth became a bit whiter but much more uneven. I was away on business so called the dentist and they said to keep going and it should even out. But since I was not at home near my dentist i didn’t want it to get worse especially on my front teeth. My dentist suggested i continue on one back tooth and see what happens. So i continued on one tooth for about a week, but the uneveness did not go away so i did not continue with the bleaching. When I returned a week ago to show my dentist, and return the kit she said I was correct to stop and that she would call the company who provided the bleach. They said this can happen sometimes. In any case, she said there was nothing that could be done and to leave it and not use whitening toothpastes. I am now left with patchyness which I am very aware of and bother me and miss my normal teeth and regret starting this process. Will the bleeching eventually fade and go back to how my teeth were before or am I stuck with this uneveness? It has been four months since I stopped bleaching and I don’t see any fading of the patches that are whiter than the rest of my teeth. Can you please advise? Is there anything I can do without continuing to bleach b/c i am worried to continue as worried it will get worse. is there another treatment? My dentist thought it was more likely that this was something under my teeth that has come up (don’t know if it is calcium deposits) as a result of the bleaching than uneven bleaching b/c they were custom trays. Please help! Thanks

I have had problems with my teeth for years since an infection. What can be done?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011
Q.

I have had problems with my teeth for years since an infection while pregnant. My teeth have never been really white but I’ve always been told I had a nice smile. I have veneers either side of my top two front teeth. I saw the dentist today and he said my teeth are an A2 and they are not brown and he did not think they needed whitening. Is A2 a white tooth. I just have a complex these days about my teeth as I feel I’ve lost a nice smile. Also, my daughter is disabled and I clean her teeth. They are clean but food seems to stick to them. What would you recommend I use as a toothpaste (she is 13). Thank you

I would like a gap closed with cosmetic bonding, veneers, crowns or teeth whitening – cost?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011
Q.

Hello doctor,i wonder if you could help.

I would like my to get the gaps in my teeth closed, my teeth whitening and slightly shaped. I would also like both top and bottom rows done, apart from my morlars on both rows.
Generally how much do you think this would cost with the following:
a) Cosmetic Bonding
b) Veneers
c) Crowns
Is there anything else you would suggest that would be better for me to do to achieve my aim?

Thank you very much for your time.

Can you use veneers to correct an overbite problem?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011
Q.

Hello doctor can you use veneers to correct a problem overbite – I have been advised to have 6 upper veneers and 8 lower venners and to have all the work completed at once ( in a series of visits) as the dentist would be correcting a very problematic overbite and grinding problem. Surely, with this kind of problem would veneers on the front lower teeth be advisable in the first place? and what options do I have for improving the appearance of the lower teeth and to stop the wear ffrom the grinding? Many thanks for your time

I have painful wisdom teeth but am afraid of the dentist. What can I do?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011
Q.

Hi there I have a wisdom tooth coming in and it has always been a LITTLE painful, like a dull pain and I thought nothing of it, Iv had this light, dull pain for a year or more but recently (the last week) it has been getting sorer and sorer and now Ive booked-in to see my dentist on Friday 22nd April. I brush frequently, always make DOUBLY sure to brush my coming-in wisdom teeth as much as I can and use mouth wash and do the odd flossing in a week. I have a fear of the dentist because I have a fear of needles so this is why I take SUCH good care of my teeth. I am 20 and only have 1 filling which I got as a child and some white plasticy coatings in the grooves of most of my molars that my uncle gave me as he is a dental hygienist.
The gum around my painful Wisdom tooth is VERY red and swollen and the pain can be too much to handle, Ive been taking Anadin to cope with the pain better but even the rubbing of my tongue when I swallow or talk or eat is painful as it rubs the swollen bit of gum.
Ive set myself up for getting it removed but I am VERY scared of needles in my mouth and just thinking about it makes me cry LOL Im just wondering if theyd still use General Anaesthetic with me? Im in Scotland.
Thanks

The new glue for my bonded retainers tastes weird. Can another material be used?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011
Q.

Hello Dr Mark Hughes. I hope you can help me. Can you tell me how is the composite glued on bonded retainers supposed to feel? I had to have mine topped up again after 10 years of wearing but the stuff another orthodontist has used tastes like plastic and is making me feel quite sick. I have never had a problem with it previously but the stuff he has used feels very different to the cement used previously. It has been this way for around three months and has not got better. In my case can it be trimmed down and another material be put over the top of it? Its really getting me down. Thank you for your time and all the best.

Help tooth ache after cap is doing my head in! Can you advise?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011
Q.

I had a tooth capped in November 2009. Shortly afterward i started experiencing a dull pain around that area of the mouth and gums; an uncomfortable pulse in the capped tooth and facial pain radiating from my cheekbone under my eye to that tooth. I have had many visits to doctor and dentist. My GP ruled out sinus problems and gave nme antibiotics as a precaution. Dentist has taken out a good tooth next to capped tooth in case this was causing problem; refilled teeth with new style filling in case this causing problem; and 2 weeks ago took out capped tooth although he said he could see nothing wrong there. I still have a dreadful ache and occasional; shooting pains around that area. My teeth on that side of my face ache and i cannot eat on that side without severe pain. I am desperate and do not want to loose any more good teeth. Help.

Would veneers help fixed my twisted teeth?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011
Q.

Hi Dr Glaister,

When i was very young (I’m now 30) I slipped over in the bath and cracked my right upper central incisor (this has a vaneer on it now) and damaged my left upper central incisor, so that it began to turn inwards. It has now turned about 45 degrees inwards and looks very unpleasant. I would like to have the right one looked at and possibly repaired as the vaneer was not applied perfectly and is slightly misshapen. I would also like to repair the left one so that it looks normal again. While growing up I had a 2mm gap between my 2 upper central incisors, but that’s no longer there as my left upper is sitting just slightly behind my right. What would you recommend? How much is it likely to cost? How soon could I have it done?

Kind Regards,

I am nervous of the dentist but need treatment for my stained teeth and wisdom teeth removal

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011
Q.

Hi, I haven’t been happy with my teeth for a long time and its getting me down, my wisdom teeth are coming through and are sore but when I went to the dentists I fainted so I’m too scared to return. My front tooth is stained more then the rest so I’m guessing its rotting? And they have ridges on the bottom? Like a babys tooth. I would LOVE to get them all ripped out and have fresh, healthy teeth put in! Please help me I’m 23 and very upset with my smile.

Does a scale and polish hurt and how long does it take?

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011
Q.

Hello dcotor, could you please tell me

what is scale and polish?

Does it hurt?

How long does it take to do?

Is it the same thing as going to the hygienist for a clean-up?

I am confused.

Also, I have recently straightened my teeth using invisalign and i normally wear my retainers every night since finishing the treatment. I also floss my teeth and recently i am noticing that there are gaps appearing in my lower teeth. Is this due to the flossing? I think it is. Please can u advice me on what to do? Many thanks doctor
