I am 23 years old and in full time education, can I get braces on the NHS?

Friday, January 28th, 2011
Q.

Hi there,

My question is in relation to orthodontic surgery.

I am currently 23 years old and in Full time education.

I had permanent braces fitted when i was a teenager and they were removed at the age of 15. I wore my retainer for the time scales my dentist advised. When i first had the braces fitted at 14 the dentist did not advise i needed to have any teeth removed, however I have had trouble with my wisdom teeth coming through and now my mouth feels over crowded.

Now 8 years later my top teeth have moved and my front 4 teeth had moved back to their original positions before having the braces!

I am really conscious of my smile, it’s not awful but i am aware of my teeth and have seen them looking better.

My main questions are – can i get braces again? And can adults only have invisylin? And what would the cost be? Being that i am a full time student will i get any benefit for this from the NHS or a discount? Your response would be much appreciated.

I have a slight underbite and protruding teeth, what should I do to correct it?

Friday, January 28th, 2011
Q.

I am 35 years old, and believe it or not only just realised that fact I have a very slight underbite! No dentist has ever mentioned this to me before, which astounds me! To be honest I’ve never even noticed most people’s teeth are set differently! One front tooth in particular is really starting to protrude though. I was wondering what are the most cost effective actions to try and rectify this?

What can i do about my concerns with my retainer now I have a new orthodontist owns the practice?

Thursday, January 27th, 2011
Q.

Andrew, you recommended to me recently that I see my orthodontist over concerns that my teeth are shifting under my bonded retainer. However, somebody else owns the practice now and they won’t let me see him, even though I am happy to pay for him and he did the treatment for me brilliantly. Is this unfair treatment on me and what is the best thing to do? I highly trust this orthodontist and I am upset that they won’t let me see him even though I said I will pay. Can I complain?

What treatment would you recommend for crowded teeth and overbite?

Thursday, January 27th, 2011
Q.

I am 23 years old and have a very large overbite. I wore braces when I was in my teens n my teeth were straight for a while but now one of my front teeth is sticking out and sticks over my bottom lip slightly. My bottom row of teeth is slightly overcrowded but the top is a lot worse. What treatment do you recomend ? I dont think braces are an option now as they are too far out ? Would veneers work and if so would I still have a large overbite ? Please help I am depressed about this and would like to see someone as soon as possible.

I have been told that I need to have teeth removed and then braces, what advice can you offer?

Monday, January 24th, 2011
Q.

Dear Dr Hughes,

I have just been to have a consultation for Invisalign at an orthodontists in Exeter. I was told that invisalign could straighten my teeth perfectly, however because my front teeth project forward (10mm i think he said), my teeth would look straight but the front ones would stick out even more (maybe 11mm). Instead, the dentist recommended that I first have a molar taken out of each side of my top teeth, then have train tracks for around 18months as these would straighten and bring my front teeth in further. I really do not want train tracks (I know you can get white ones etc) and wondered if you had any other suggestions? My teeth are not in major need of restoration, it is just mainly the top right lateral incisor that is twisted so half is underneath the front tooth next to it, and of course the projection of my front teeth. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Is a large gap in front teeth eligible for six month smiles?

Monday, January 24th, 2011
Q.

Hello, I have a large gap at the front of my mouth at the top and smaller gaps at the bottom. Do u tink a large gap can be fixed with the ‘6 months smile’ if not can u recommend a treatment for large gaps and tel me how long it will take to fix this problem? Also, would I need 2 separate treatments 4 the top and bottom teeth?
