Cannot open his mouth normally

Q. I have a grandson who will be 3 in May. His mouth cannot open normally. When he was a baby we could hardly get the spoon with food on it in his mouth because he cannot open it. He is unable to eat like a hamburger or a lollipop. I am very concerned and feel like he needs some kind of corrective surgery. He was to have his tear ducts opened last week but they were afraid to do it because of intubating him and his mouth not opening. Now he has to see a specialist at Duke and I am wondering where do we start to follow through with this jaw problem? What is it called when a child cannot open his mouth because of some structual problem? He looks normal and definitely acts normal he just can’t open his mouth very wide at all. I don’t know where to start. thank-you

A. Hi

I would recommend you see your gp for a referral to a specialist Paediatrician. I am sure by having a full examination, your questions will be answered.
