Can you treat an overbite without braces

Q. Hello, i have a question…how would cosmetic dentistry help an over bite or ‘forward’ front teeth without using braces..my top teeth are nearly 1cm in front of the bottom but i don’t want braces, thankyou.

A. Veneers can reduce an overbite if your teeth are proclined forwards.  The down side is that there is a possiblity of damaging the nerve of the tooth and the tooth may require root canal treatment.  I would always recommend orthodontics before veneers – there is an appliance I use called an Inman aligner which allows tooth movement within about 1 to 3 months.  Following this the teeth are retained either with a night time retainer or a permanent retainer bonded to the backs of the teeth.  Veneers may still be required to improve shape and size of the teeth but the nerves of the teeth are far more likely to stay healthy.
