Can you fix a large amalgam filling with a white filling?

Q. Are you able to fix a large amalgam filling with a white filling or do the two materials not stick? Also I have a fine line of my front tooth which is stained, what would you recommend to remove this stain? Thank you,
A. You can’t stick to amalgam reliably, the whole filling will need drilling out and replacing. I would recommend a ceramic filling for extra durability. The stain on the front tooth may polish off.
