Can the position of my jaw be causing my speech difficulties?

Q.
Hi, I’m 15 and over the last year or two I’ve developed a speech problem (trouble pronouncing s/sh sounds), I’m pretty sure that my teeth are causing it but I’m not sure how exactly. I’ve got quite a large overbite (1cm) but I think it’s my bottom teeth that are causing the problem, they’ve started moving forward to meet the top teeth and it’s really causing me problems, I’ve been to speak to people about this and they’ve said that my bottom jaw is further back than my top jaw, but I can’t have surgury done to correct this until I’m 17. I guess my question is, can the problem i’ve described cause speech issues or could something else be causing it?

Hi

Yes bite/jaw position problems are very often associated with speech difficulties. Have you been to a speech therapist as this can help while you’re waiting for your surgery and orthodontics. Your specialist orthodontist may be able to recommend someone
