Can medication cause staining to the teeth?

Q. My mum has been in hospital for 6 weeks due to an infected hip replacement . Over the six weeks i have noticed that her teeth are going very stained (black in colour). The nursing staff are informing me that this is due to the medication that she is taking. does this seem possible ? kind regards

A. There are many medications that change the oral flora of the mouth and sometimes this can result in staining so this can be possible but it would depend on the medication – have a look at the side effects on the medication information leaflet inside the box. This should inform you of all the possible side effects. Dr K Solanki
