After suffering from peridiontal disease i need a bone graft
Q. After suffering from peridiontal disease sinnce my mid twenties I finally had to have my first two visible upper teeth removed that required a partial upper denture. I absolutely hate the full palate on the upper denture. My nhs dentist intimated I might need a bone graft fom my hip if I considered implants I have had three other molars removed in the past that didn’t show. What can you advise
A. Dental implants do need healthy bone and a large enough volume of bone to be successful.
The Periodontal disease removes the healthy bone from around teeth. The area once healed will often have less bone than an area where a single tooth was lost due to non infective causes.
The periodontal disease will need to be stabilised before implant therapy as a related disease can affect implants.
To determine if you need a bone graft ( +/_ hip vs particle grafts vs Other block sites) You need a clinical exam and some radiographs. Maybe a 3D jaw scan.
Then you can mimick the likely final result and decide on the comprimises you are likely to need to make. You shoulsd also have a plan B if the ideal result s not achieved.
Finally you are likely to be a high maintainance case for the future.
