A black mark has appeared down one side of my veneers what do you think it could be?

Q. Hi, I had some veneers fitted to my teeth around two years ago and a while back a black mark has appeared down one side which I thought was just a problem with the colouring on the veneer. I went back to my dentist and he seemed puzzled about what it was and told me it wasn’t the veneer but my tooth behind. There are no problems with my gums so the tooth isn’t rotting but he said the only thing he could do would be to drill into the back of my tooth and pack it and didn’t seem to keen to do that and asked if it bothered me that much, and recom abmended we just keep an eye on it. Since then when I have looked at it more, the mark seems to be going right down to the bottom of the veneer so I can’t see how it can be the tooth behind as that will have been drilled down to a stump. What do you think it could be? Should I get a second opinion? Many thanks

A. Hi emma, I’m not sure without seeing it but it could be some discolouration of the tooth underneath or maybe a slight fracture of the porcelain. I guess if it is noticeable then removal and replacement of the veneer ids your only option.
