I’ve Just Had A Root Canal Filled And The Pain Has Made Me Cry. I’m Scared Of Going To The Dentist Now. What Should I Do, My Mouth Has Started To Swell?

Q.
Hello Dr Shaffie, I went to the dentist recently and had a root canal fill and I’m in bad pain since. I can’t eat or put my teeth together and my face has swelled up on the side the tooth was done. What should I do? I would give it a five out of ten in pain, the pain is in my ear to the mouth and has made me cry. It looks like the inside of my mouth is swelling where the needle was put in. I was told I would get pain but this pain is too much. How can going to the dentist do this to you? I wished I never went now, it has made me scared of going to a dentist again.

Hello, unfortunately sometimes when you do a root canal, it might hurt for a little while but swelling is not normal and you should discuss this with your dentist, they may give you antibiotics. Although you have pain at the moment, you should be aware that not going to the dentist for procedures such as this can cause much longer lasting problems if the root is left to decay. I hope you start to feel better, Dr Shaffie.
