Will braces permanently close the gap in my front teeth?

Q.
Hello Dr.
Am 15 years old and I have a gap between my two top front teeth. I have always wanted to get braces, but I have been told that if I got any, they’ll only close up the gap for a few years then it’ll be back again because I was born with the gap in my teeth.
I would please like to verify from you how true this information is; as well as the possibilities of any health risks getting braces that will close up the gap completely could have on me.
A.
Any orthodontics has the potential to relapse and for this reason a retainer is usually worn after the teeth have been moved. This should prevent the teeth from opening up.
