white fillings on the NHS

Q. Hello, could you please tell me if i am entitled to a white filling on the fourth tooth from the front, I went to the NHS dentist last week for a small filling as there was a small patch of decay on the front of the fourth tooth along, I came out with a great big metal filling shining out at me, I was horrified. The following day it fell out. I have to go back tomorrow for a replacement but I am hoping as this is a very visable area i can request a white one. Many thanks.

A.

The NHS does not specify the material used. Its own research body NICE (the national institute for Clinical Excellence ) supports the use of amalgam ( metal ) as a suitable filling. IT is the dentists own choice to use an appropriate material, which in this case, amalgam is. THerefore  it is likely that you would need to upgrade to a white filling as a private contract item.

Hi, I’m almost finished my orthodontic treatment, and my teeth look great in comparison to what they used to look like, my only problem is, I got a filling a few years ago on the front of my front teeth (a little bit on each front tooth) and was wondering if there’s any way of concealing it’s appearance as it’s noticeable to me (and probably others) and this is quite a uncomfortable to know. Any help regarding this situation will be greatly appreciated. Yours sincerely.

As your teeth have moved the best option is to replace the filling, if you want to whiten your teeth do this before the filling is replaced.
