What can be done to sort out long wide front teeth?

Q.
Hi,

My two front teeth are very large, in width and in length. I do not want veneers or crowns as I would like to keep my own teeth, but wondered if there is any way the width and leangth may be reduced through filing? and possibly invisalign to straighten them?

Thank you.

A.
Dear Enquirer,
If you have the teeth width adjusted through filing, then you will be left with a gap either side of the teeth which will not look good. It is possible to shorten the two teeth slightly in length if they are too long, a process called enameloplasty.
If you have veneers, you only need a minimal preparation on at least four of your teeth so that the front four teeth are more in balance with each other and the two front teeth don’t apear too large. You will still have your own teeth under the veneer, so this may be the best way forward.
Invisalign is not the way forward for the problem you are describing.

Thanks for your reply. I definately do not want veneers. I will have a think about what other options are available. I understand that if the sides of my teeth are shaved I will have gaps, but though invisalign may be able to close the gaps. Is this not the case? Thanks

Post veneers, if the patient thinks they are very nice but too wide, can they be filed?

If they are too wide then there isn’t much you can do unless you trim them to leave small gaps in the front teeth.
