My teeth are discoloured with tetracylin can I whiten my teeth

Q. When I was young I was given tetracylin due to rheumatic heart disease. My teeth are discolured and I can not smile because people think that I do not brush. My social life is non existing. I would love to know if there is a way to whiten my teeth.

A. I’m very sorry to hear of the obvious social embarrassment that you are having to endure. Unfortunately I see many people like you in my practice who have suffered in the same way. The good news is that following treatment they get a new self confidence and can have the social life that they have always wanted.

There are 2 ways usually used to treat tetracycline stained teeth. These are bleaching, porcelain veneers or a combination of the two.

Bleaching involves using specially made trays that accurately fit around your teeth to keep a special solution of mild bleach next to the stained teeth. This can take up to 3 months to achieve a reasonable result with severe staining. Following this, or instead of this, veneers of porcelain can be used to mask the underlying staining. Please visit my web site to see some examples of veneers and bleaching. We offer a free cosmetic consultation – ring 01727854429 and my receptionist would be more than happy to book you in.
