Is There A Way To ‘Widen’ My Smile?

Q.
Hello Dr.Hughes,
My question might be silly because it involves the natural way my jaw is shaped. However, I was wondering if there is any way to widen a smile? I have a very small mouth and lips. So when I smile only a total of 4 teeth clearly show. This tends to make my smile look “fake” and I’ve had a lot of people tell me the same. I dont know if it is maybe because my teeth’s alignment curves back more sharply than the average person, or if it has to do with some other factor.
Is there any hope in maybe widening my smile, so i can have a nice full one?

Thank you for your questions. Orthodontics may be an option for you. Quite often we can ‘widen’ the smile if the back teeth are tilted inwards or if the curve of the archform is narrow.

Another option may be the use of veneers, either porcelain or composite, to fill out the width of the back teeth and make you display more.

Sometimes for the very best result a combination of the two is required.

I’d suggest that your nest step is to come for a thorough examination and consultation to assess what can be done for you.

Kind regards

Mark
