I want veneers or crowns but I have receding gums, what can I do?

Q.
i would be grateful if you could offer me some advise regarding my teeth and gums as my dentist doesnt seem to be interested in helping…
i have receding gums on my top and bottom teeth and they seem to be getting worse. i have took the advise and now brush with an electric tooth brush or a soft brush but the receding is getting worse. im 29yrs old and along with this problem my teeth seem to be wearing down, they have become see through in places and have generally become weaker and thinner. my dentist filled the receding areas on my bottom teeth with some filling but it now stands out from the colour of my teeth and people are starting to notice. in the past i had my teeth whitened but the whitener seeped into my receding teeth and has left white areas in the teeth itself which is very noticable.. whilst the teeth are wearing down gaps are becoming bigger. all these problems are getting me down and they are getting worse.
would i be able to have caps or veneers etc on top of my own teeth to cover the problems and can they be made to look perfect? can you have caps/veneers when you have receding gums??? i want a natural smile and dont want to worry about my teeth becoming worse…
A.
If the problem of the receding gums is not solved you may have problems with veneers at a later date. It might mean visiting a gum specialist first (periodontist). Once the gums are sorted out then veneers may be the best solution to the asethetic problem

Can you tell by looking at someone if they have a lava or a porcelain crown

Trevor Says :

Not really a good crown looks like your natural tooth regardless of the type. Crowns without metal generally look more natural and cosmetic.

I have two questions; 1 – I have had a problem with receding gums on my two front lower teeth since I were about 8 (They’ve continued to recede despite regular cleaning and care) and it has now gotten to the point where I haven’t got any gum left – I’m convinced I can see my root – is there anything that can be done to improve look/security? 2 – I have a ‘gap’ caused by a slight miss alignment in the upper front teeth – can you recommend anything to fix this? Preferably something not costly as I am a student. Thanks!

1. You may need a graft to repar the recession along with extensive cleaning with a hygienist or gum specialist. 2. Bonding white filling might be a cheap simple solution to the gap?

You might be a good candidate for surgery to cover the roots. Find a periodontist to see if they can help you. If not you could see my periodontist in Essex 08443 87 87 88

I have a couple of teeth on the top where the gums are receding and the root is showing. I have been told that the only solution is to change the way I clean my teeth and by using a soft bristled brush. I am already using an electric toothbrush so that the brush does the work and not me. What I would like to know is whether composite resin type fillings be used to cover the root or whether gum grafting is the only solution should the problem get worse?

Brycen Says :

Covering roots with filling helps to reduce wear of the roots aesthetically gum grafting works well but oit depends on the underlying bone. Try to brush more gently and see how it progresses before starting surgical treatment.

I had chemotherapy and my consultant thinks it’s possible that’s caused a slight receding of the gums. This now shows the top of a previous bridge. I also have a crease down my front tooth, a small gap between my front two teeth. Is it possible to cover bridges with veneers, I have two, one either side of each front tooth in top set, or would I have to have my bridges replaced? I know my front top 8 teeth could look lovely with them if it were possible.
any advice would be very much appreciated.
