I Tongue Thrust At Night And It’s Made The Lower Portion Of My Face Look Out Of Proportion. Would I Need Jaw Surgery To Correct This?

Q.
Hey there. For many years my teeth have appeared as perfect although I do have a slight open bite. However, this is not my main concern as I tongue thrust every night and this has pushed both my top and bottom teeth forward which has projected my mouth beyond the straight line between the tip of my nose and chin. The combination of this and my facial features makes the lower third of my face look out of proportion to the rest of my face. It seems my jaw protrudes the straight line between my forehead and mouth. I am not sure what you think of think about this you would probably need to see a picture if I am right? Could this be solved by simply closing the open bite with braces or is jaw surgery to reduce the size of the lower jaw needed? Would a lip reduction benefit me?

Thanks so much for your reply in advance.

Hello and thank you for your enquiry. It could well be the case that you would need the combination of orthognathic surgery and fixed orthodontics so yes I would need to see detailed photos and X-rays to determine which treatment to suggest. If you’d like to find a little bit more about the various cosmetic treatment on offer in the meantime, you can search this website for further help and information. Kind regards, Mark.
