I have had crowns for 23 years can I replace then with veneers?

Q. Dear Dr Julian Caplan,
I currently have two crowns on my front teeth which I had done 23 years ago and I know they need replacing. Can they be replaced with veneers instead of crowns?
K.L.

A. Dear K.L,
A crown is a restoration that fits 360 degrees around the tooth. A veneer fits only on the front surface of the tooth. Once a tooth has been crowned the only possible replacement for that tooth is a new crown. A veneer is not possible as all the surfaces of the tooth have been shaped.
