I have crooked top teeth are lumineers the right treatment ?

Q. Hello – I have crooked teeth, especially the top teeth with one of the main front teeth having had the nerve removed 20 years ago. Are lumineers appropriate treatment for this please? Thanks P

A. Dear P,

Lumineers are the ” in ” treatment at the moment. However, they are not the perfect answer to all aesthetic tooth problems. The real plus with lumineers is that there is no tooth preparation i.e.. no cutting of the tooth is required. In some select circumstances this is fine but the majority of cosmetic dental problems require a conventional veneer with some tooth shaping. If tooth shaping is not done over bulky veneers will often be the result – this will give a less than ideal cosmetic outcome and give potential gum problems in the future. The problems of incorrect midlines, poor gingival symmetry, rotated teeth (to name but a few problems) cannot be treated. Also the teeth may not function correctly resulting in chipping or fracturing of the veneer.

You specifically say you have crooked teeth and I suspect for the reasons given above that the ideal treatment for you will be standard veneers and not Lumineers.

Hope this helps.
