I have bad breath, what should I do?

Q.
Dear Dr. Sunita,

I have a problem in bad smill.
I do daily brush my teeth 2 time, and make it with thread as well.

but I should keep eating gums to reduce the smill and the ger that covers my teeth.

I wish you have any good solution to solve that imparesing problem.

as covering my teeth with ceramic that will not prevent my teeth with gathering with that white “ger” to stay on the teeth.
thank you

A.
Dear Enquirer,
Bad breath/halitosis is often a symptom of gum disease and/or tooh decay and needs professional treatment with a dentist/hygienist. Peasebook an appointment with a dentist who can assess you and help you to get dentally fit.

Sunita

Dear sir/madam For over a year now I suffer from very bad permanent bad breath and I can’t cope with it any more. I have done everything to try and stop it including mouthwash and brushing several times a day. Now it is at apoint where I can’t handle it anymore. At the moment I almost feel like vomiting when I taste and smell my breath in the month of Ramadan. Please contact me with help because I am sure it must be more than just bacteria in mymouth as it can never be removed but instead just covered up. Thank you for your time.

I have a specific situation at present which I am struggling to control. Firstly my halitosis is not chronic and for much of the time is not a problem. The only time I seem to have a problem is first thing in the morning or when I drink alcohol. Most of the time I still have a white coating at the back of my tongue and I used to automatically associate this with bad breath but it seems that this is not always the case. Is that correct? Is there anything I can do to remove this as I find it quite unsightly.

Now I didn’t used to have this problem but I believe that some time in my mid to late twenties (I am now 32) I had gingivitis. The reason that I think this is I have some reduction of my gums around a couple of my teeth. This went undetected for a number of years as I didn’t suffer any bleeding and my gums appeared healthy. However after a friend told me that I had malador from my mouth whilst we were having a drink I decided to visit a dentist. There they diagnosed gum disease and changed my whole oral routine. Whereas I used to just brush twice a day with a manual toothbrush I now brush twice a day with an electric toothbrush, floss daily, use a tongue scraper and use mouthwash twice a day (used to be dentyl but I have just changed to retardex). I also now drink much more water daily (anything from 4-6 pints) as well as eating fresh fruit daily (is it true that apples and bananas have a negative effect on one’s breath?) It is now 5 or 6 months since I first saw the dentist and my breath has definitely got better with my new oral hygiene. As mentioned though I still suffer with morning breath to some degree (it is not as bad as it has been in the last few years but nowhere near as good as it used to be up to my mid to late twenties) and I still produce a bad smell from my mouth when I drink alcohol. As my gum disease has cleared up my dentist has advised me to consult my doctor or an ear, nose and throat specialist as they say that there is no reason why I should have any kind of malodorous at all now. Is this correct or is there a possibility that this smell that I cannot get rid of is the legacy of gingivitis which went untreated? Furthermore is there anything I can do get rid of it? I long to be able to kiss my girlfriend in the morning or go out with friends again for a quiet drink. These are things that I’ve had taken away from me which I desperately want back.

I’ve used a Sonicare toothbrush for some time. They’re good, but expensive and break down, needing replacement usually just as guarantee runs out. What would you recommend for i) Best cleaning effect ii) Good value? The Which? website says that sonic toothbrush technology is not proven to be any better at removing plaque. What do you think how does this compare with very much cheaper rotary mobels? I have had gum disease in the past, but regular use of electric brushes, following periodontal work, has largely cured that.

I have very bad breath but am very hygenic. I cleanse every day and use mouth washes including Corsodyl which I think makes it worse. How can I help myself – I am very distressed and its losing me confidence. I’ve paid to have teeth taken out thinking it would help and am losing my mind over this. I can smell the stench and use floss every other day – what can I do??? Thank you for your help.

There are some dental causes such as being unable to breath through your nose , unable to seal lips around teeth as well as nose and throat problems that might be the cause. Regular visits to a good Hygeinist are also recommended. I am out of the habit of recommending Retardex mouthwash (I have seen it stocked in large Boots Chemist)but some patients find it is worth using on a trial basis. Waterpik / or Sonicare Airfloss has also worked for some of my breath clinic patients. Regards

i never use to floss, and have recently started to. Where i have a crown fitted, the one side of it when i do floss, i get a foul smell. Its not everytime i floss, more when i have eaten and then flossed. I have been to my dentist who said that with regular flossin this should go away. Im paranoid about havin bad breath. Would you say that the dentist dianosis was correct…Many thanks

Justus Says :

It is possible that you catch food differently around the crown than you do around your natural tooth. This could lead to this odor. Most likely, you are the only one aware of the odor. As long as you use good hygiene habits you should be fine. If bad odor becomes a problem there are specific mouth wash like Oxyfresh designed to treat this problem
