i have a gummy smile

Q. My son and i have the same “gummy’ smile. i was teased as a kid and always wished there was something i could do. now it is happening to him and i sympathize so much. i heard about the use of botox in the upper lip so the lip is not drawn back as far when he smiles. i am not sure who would do this procedure…a cosmetic dentist of plastic surgeon.any info would be helpful! regards,

A. This is not well recognised as a procedure and would only give temporary relief if carried out requiring repeat procedures for life.  The consequence of parralizing a muscle can mean that other muscles working against this muscle get the upper hand.  This can lead to unusual smile patterns that may be more socially embarrassing,  A consultation with a dentist who has cosmtic dentistry experience would be the best first step.
