My cracked tooth reacts to pressure how can I get it fixed

Q. I have a cracked tooth and my dentist plans to fit a gold crown over it because it is a back tooth and this will be the strongest sort of crown. The nerve seems to be healthy so I have not had root canal treatment. However, the tooth does seem to hurt when pressured and I presume this is because the cracked tooth reacts to pressure. Could the crack be repaired so that it doesn’t move when under pressure or must it rely simply on the tooth being held together by the strong crown?

A. Hi many thanks for your email, i think the cracked tooth needs protecting and the crown whether it be gold or a bonded porcelain crown should be used to keep the tooth together. sometimes these cracks can propergate right through the nerve of the tooth so my advice would be first to explore the crack, do a core build up on the tooth to make sure it settles preferably in white filling material and then if the tooth stays settled crown the tooth. hope this is helpful.
