I Had A Root Canal Recently And The Pain Is Still Intense. Antibiotics Don’t Seem To Be Working. What Should I Do?

Q.
Hello Dr Moore. I’ve had really painful toothache on a crowned tooth which has previously had root canal work on it since last Sunday. I have taken amoxicillin 500mg for 5 days. The pain is still really intense and I can’t eat or drink as it flares the pain to intensity even further. What do you suggest is the best course of action? Do you recommend extraction? The crown has been fitted over a year ago now and I have noticed my crowns coming away from the gum line possibly due to receding gums. Really hope you can help me with this. Many thanks.

Hi. It’s a pleasure to answer your question, thanks for getting in touch. If it’s not responding to antibiotics and root canal isn’t an option then removal of the tooth is certainly an option you might have to consider if the pain hasn’t subsided after another week or so. Check in with your regular dentist and discuss the options available to you. I hope this helps. Best of luck, Dr Andrew Moore.
