I Am Self Conscious About My Teeth And Want To Know Whether I’m Too Young For Teeth Whitening?

Q.
Hello Dr Gambroudes, I’m 16, 17 in January and I really want to get my teeth whitened as I feel self conscious about my teeth as they’re slightly yellow. I don’t want to use a home kit as I don’t want to get it wrong. Would someone at my age be allowed laser teeth whitening? Also what are the disadvantages, how long will it take? Will it be noticeable and how will it cost? Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hello and thank you for your question. In the first instance you are totally correct in being cautious about using over the counter ‘home kits’, as tooth whitening should only be carried out by a qualified dental professional (no one else). Many systems are available to whiten your teeth and your dentist will be able to guide you to the most suitable for you. However I personally wouldn’t be comfortable whitening your teeth until you were 18.

The 2 major systems being used in the UK at the moment are Zoom (Philips) and Enlighten. Zoom combines an in office procedure using a light activated whitening gel followed by traditional home whitening using trays. Enlighten is similar but doesn’t rely on a special light to activate the whitening gel for the in office procedure. Both of these systems are incredibly effective and you should see significant changes in tooth shade following the treatment. Costs vary but you should budget around the £500 for a really good system. Cheaper alternatives are available.

I hope you find this helpful. Regards Marcus Gambroudes.
