I Am Constantly Getting Gum Disease As I Have Gaps In My Teeth. Can The Gaps Be Filled In Any Way?

Q.
I am constantly getting gum disease, I am 61 and visit the dentist regularly. I have gaps between nearly all of my teeth, and with age I suppose and fed up of picking food from my teeth every single time I eat food. Can you tell me if the gaps can be filled or what can be done as I need to sort this problem out? My dentist says that I cannot have the gaps filled, this problem is driving me mad. I hate going to the dentist for the hygienist to clean my teeth as it really hurts, my gums are very sore at the moment and this is due to gum disease yet again.

Hello and thank you for getting in touch. Sadly it not possible to fill in the gaps between the teeth to prevent food trapping, as this will most likely exacerbate your gum disease. Also seeing the hygienist regularly will help eliminate the pockets around your teeth and help prevent your gum disease getting worse. If you find treatment with the hygienist uncomfortable, then you should ask them to carry out the treatment under a local anaesthetic. There is no extra charge for this, and it will mean the hygienist can do a really thorough job. I will be the first to admit that I find scaling very sensitive and always have it done under a local anaesthetic. Please don’t be deterred from visiting the hygienist as it is really important in preventing further advancement of your gum disease.
As far as managing your food trapping issue, I would suggest using the larger size Te-Pe brushes after meals as they are really effective.
I really hope this helps. Kind regards, Marcus Gambroudes.
