Can I have implant treatment completed in UK?

Friday, February 19th, 2010
Q. Dental Implants I am from South Africa, had started the procedure in South Africa July 2008, two upper molars, this was being done in 3 phases to assist me with costs, completed the 2nd phase stage and have the titanium posts in place, I have not been able to get back to SA to have the gum reopened and the teeth screwed into place due to lack of funds due to me becoming unemployed July 09….am I compromising the situation, how can I have this completed and what would the costs be here in the UK? In the meantime my bite and teeth are not good due to the silly temp plate that I have to wear.,
A. I would contact your dentist in SA and ask for advice, as he would know you mouth. The costs in the UK woudl depend on the implant system used.

What kind of work experience would help me to become dentist?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
Q. HI, it would be fantastic if you could answer this question. I am currently studying my GCSE’s and have wanted to persue a career in dentistry for a very long time. I am determined to get there but I would like to ask what sorts of work experience would be needed for this career. I know that areas of care would be the best option, could you please give me some examples Please get back as soon as possible because I am trying my best to become a sucsessful dentist! (sorry if this message was long?),
A. Some dental clinics allow work experience . Other alternatives be other health care professionals i.e gps, hospital, etc

I had a bad experience abroad and how need treatment to fix this

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
Q. Hello Doctor! I had 16 implants done in poland also I had 2 sinus lifts I was never given a price by the dentist but my friend assured me it would be about 16 thousand pounds and I know now this is reasnoble unfortunatly I had only 20 thousand pounds and to carry on with the bridge work it would be another 15 thousand so I was left for over a year as I could not carry on as I had no money left but I felt the dentist should have gave me some kind of consultation which he did not I never even got a receit for any work carried out anyway I was left with an old plate on the upper arch of my mouth and nothing on the lower half I have now found a good dentist here that is willing to help me out but there has been a lot of damage down due to the time scale and some implants have ben affected plus he has to give me another sinus lift on the left hand side the total cost would be another 30 thousand pounds which I dont have but have managed to get 10 thousand pounds so he has offered me the choice to utilising some of the implants and giving me a clip in denture which was not my dream but after going about with no teeth for nearly two years I have to go with this suggestion and that sounds ok but could I ask for what way I would like them to look? as they are all together? and would it be possible to have them in porcalin and not acylic? what would you do and if posible to go for porcalin would this make a serious diference in the price if so how much? sorry for all this it’s just I am very vunurable and shy and when I go to see m dentist I won’t ask these questions I’m 52 years old but had a serious eating disorder for nearly 30 years although I am fine now I’m at my wits end with all that has happened and would be very gratefull if you could get back to me in fact it would help me you’ll never now how much I know your time is precious but after all that has hapened and all the money I have spent well it would be 30 thousand I’m no way a wealthy lady and had to get a bank loan but if you could get back to me it would mean the world to me regards mary bradley,
A. I am sorry to hear abot your circumstances. I would recommend you really ask these questions to your dentist who is carrying out your current treatment, as he will know your mouth better than I without an examination.

Dentist has told me to get crowns but can I get teeth removed instead?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010
Q. I have an overbite and my only teeth that I dislike so much are my two front teeth. They are longer than all my other teeth and starting to overlap each other. I have consulted My dentist and he suggested I have them capped or crowned. What I would really like is to have them knocked out so I can have two new teeth that match the rest of my Teeth which are all in perfect condition. Would you have any other reccomendations as to how I can fix this problem?,
A. Of course your dentist is right in saying that it may be possible to be recrowned. Other alternatives are possible, but difficult to say without an examination.

What altenatives are there to braces as I have short roots?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010
Q. Hello there, i am an 18 year old male and am concerned about the appearance of my teeth; they protrude by about 4mm. Ihave been advised against getting braces due to my short roots, so i was wondering if there was anything else you could do about it, such as crowns or veneers? any help would be appreciated- thanks,
A. Hi Very difficult to answer without a clinical and radiographic examination. I am sure something can be done though. Personally i would not recommend veneers to correct an overjet at your young age.

What is the deal with the free teeth whitening at dentist?

Monday, February 15th, 2010
Q. I see a lot of dentists that adverstise free teeth whitening with any service. 2 questions: 1. I thoguht these procedures were hundreds of dollars. How can they afford to offer them for free 2. If I would like to have my teeth whitened, but do not want to have to do any follow up, what is the best procedure to have done. Thanks,
A. Many practices offer free whitening with certain treatment options. Of course certain procedures only offer the most basic whitening options. I personally recommend enlighten as the best whitening option to my patients.

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010
Q. I lost teeth enamel after waithening a not vital teeth. What should i do? it is going to darken? how can i protect my teeth?,
A. HiFirstly teeth whitening will not cause enamel loss. There would be another reason. I would recommend an examination to find out the cause and therefore the treatment options.

What to do as veneers are cracking?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010
Q. My son has empress veneers on eight of his teeth (top front) He had other veneers before this that were awful and bulky. These veneers are beautiful but now they are cracking. His dentist is telling him that his bottom teeth are not straight and rubbing the top. The veneers he had before never cracked, So we are so skeptical about this whole process now and of course wish we never did it. Can you offer any advice?,
A. HiMy advice would be to have a second opinion if you are unsure about the first. I am sure there is an appropriate way for them to be protected in the future.

Will I have a crown after root canal treatment?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010
Q. I am 17 years old, and today had the first treatment of a root canal. All I was wanting to ask you, is will I have a crown afterwards? Also, I will admit, my dental hygiene is not the best in the world! I have 2 filling, the same tooth on either side of the mouth, however it is only the left hand side that requires a root canal, why is this?,
A. A root canal is usually required if there is an abscess associated with the tooth. There can be other reasons. In some circumsatances a crown may required after the treatment.

What are locators?

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010
Q. i have been told about locaters can you tell me what it means an the cost. Thanks,
A. Locators are used as an attachment on dental implants. These attachments help to make a denture more retentive. I have used them on many occasions and find that patients are able to eat anything.

Q. Hi there, I have a front crown thats chipped and theres a little piece missing. I don’t have the funds to redo another crown by private dentistry. Was wondering if the missing part that is chipped can be restored with filling material or something?,

I am unhappy with veneers treatment received abroad

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
Q. Hello I recently had veneers fitted on my front 4 teeth in India however I am not happy with them. They feel too big for my mouth and I feel like they stick out further than my teeth should. They are much bigger than my original teeth Although if necessary I will pay for new veneers I was wondering if there is any other solution you could suggest? Many Thanks,
A. Of course one possibility is to have new veneers, but it is difficult to say without looking at the mouth.I alway make a wax up of what the teeth are going to look like, prior to making veneers. This allows the patient to evaluate them and make any changes if required.

Is there a cheap orthodontic option?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
Q. Hello, I have had 2 consultations now regarding orthodontic treatment with 2 different dentists. I have been told that what i want to achieve is a minor case. But clearstep or invisalign are coming out very expensive and fixed braces a little less. Could a minor case not be treated with a removable appliance to reduce cost, or are there and other alternatives at a lower cost? Many Thanks,
A. There is a possibility that it could be treated by removable appliance if there is minor crowding. We also offer other options which are cheaper than invislaign and clearstep in certain case only.
