Q. Im 17 and I have a very prodruding jaw and can’t even smile because im so self concious, my face looks flat and my chin sticks out. I’ve tried to convince myself its not noticable but i have had a couple of people comment on it. I think i may have a very slight underbite but i can just make my top teeth go over the bottom one. Is it possible for me to get jaw surgery to correct it? It not purely costmetic because i do get an aching in my jaw as well. Would i be able to get this on the NHS? Or if i would have to pay how much would it cost?
A. Hi
It is very difficult to say what type of treatment you may require without carrying out an examination. I would recommend you see a dentist to discuss your options.

It is very difficult to answer this question as each case is specific. I would recommend you seek specialist advise from someone who carries out lingual orthodontics.

Q. I have benn trying to get any answers I can on how to fix a vertical indentation in my daughter’s gums above a congenitilly missing tooth. She had braces removed a few weeks ago and the separating of the teeth left the indentation. I was told yesterday by a Periodontist that a bone graft and mini, temporary implant would take care if this until she is old enough to have a perminant implant put in. And that they can be done at the same time. Please tell me if you think this is a good idea. Or will I be causing her more problems when she is older. I already feel that if I had asked more guestions and/or had a second opinion before the 2nd phase of braces she may not have a noticable indentation in her gums right in the front of her mouth. Thank you for your help.
A. Hi
Unfortunately in this situation it would be inappropriate for me to give any advice without examing the mouth, teeth and gums. If you have concerns about the treatment plan, I would recommend a second opinion. Best of luck!

Q. Hi, I had two amalgam fillings yesterday morning, one in an upper left molar and the other in a lower left molar. The top filling was fine but the lower tooth was agony when the dentist drilled and I had to be given a further two injections to make it bearable. Where I had those injections is still very sore and my jaw muscle hurts too much for me to open my mouth wide enough to eat or talk loudly. Should my jaw still hurt this much and why didnt the anaesthetic work? I still have another filling to go but am now too scared to go back.
A. Hi
The pain you may getting is due to the injection affecting the muscle. I would not worry about this and will heal in time. Sometimes this unfortuantely can occur.
If you are conerned about this and future treatment I would speak to your dentist. I am sure he /she will answer your concerns.

Q. I have booked an appointment with you to get some advice about what to do with my old bonding on the front of my two front teeth.I think I would want them rebonded as it has lasted me 20 years its now looking old and worn and I think it needs improving.(Its to close the gap diastema)Reading this website it advises to go to a dentist who is really artistic in this area of cosmetic dentistry. When you click on the website to see which dentist does it in my area yours doesnt come up so I am not sure if you really offer this. Also If you do I was wondering whether you use hfo enamel plus material as I am told it is really strong. The reason why I am asking lots of questions is because I am quite scared of getting it redone and I want to improve the look of my teeth.please can you let me know so I have time to cancel the appointment if I need to. Thankyou.
A. Hi
We do carry out cosmetic bonding. It is what I would class as routine dentistry. We do not use HFO. We use gradia, which I feel give better results. We carry out this type of pocedure on a daily basis.
I hope this helps.

Q. Thinking of having the 6month smile braces, but would like to confirm a couple of things 1: After the treatment and i have retainers, will i have to have the retainers on forever or just for a while. 2:What specific advantage does this treatment have over veneers 3: With the braces on will i be able to eat and have a drink when i want to and can it be easily cleaned
A. 1. yes, you will require either removable or bonded or both
2. Veneers is treatment where you have to do minimal preprations on teeth, therefore it can be slightly invasive.
3.yes

Q. Since moving back to New Zealand 2 years ago I now suffer from dark staining on my teeth.I have not drunk tea or coffee for over 25 years , no red wine either.I do drink cammomile or peppermint tea. I use a good electric tooth brush & brush for over 2 mins twice per day & floss at night, my husband can attest to my oral hygeine standards, I used to nurse in the dental department of my training hospital.I am dairy & gluten free. Could it be something in our water? We have filtered on the fridge but not for the kettle on the main tap? We only used filtered water in the UK . Your advice would be appreciated as my dentist is at aloss to the cause, I see him every six months and the problem is getting worse between visits. With kind regards
A. Hi
Very strange. It is very difficult to give you an answer in thsi case without carrying out an examination. I would recommend you see also a a hugienist to remove the staining and see if this helps.

Q. Can you tell me if it is possible to have 4-5 unit bridge for the front top of the mouth and a 4 unit bridge at the bottom front of the mouth and what is the maximum teeth you can have for a bridge.Thankyou
A. Hi
It is possible , but there are may factors which needs to be taken into account
1. patients gum condition and oral hygiene
2. status of teeth
3. the patients bite
4. the teeth which are to be used
and many more….
I would recommend an examination to answer your question appropriately.

Q. Hello, I have teeth that i am very happy with except for one of my front two teeth. One of the front two teeth i have seems to stick out or be in front of my other teeth. I absolutely do not want braces but i still want to fix that one tooth. I don’t think its a major crookedness if you may call it, but i still want to fix it because it makes my other teeth look kind of crooked. Is there anyway i can get this one too in the front fixed without getting braces?
A. Hi
Your options to straighetn this area are
1. invisible braces
2. veneers
3. inman aligner

Q. Hi, im only 15 and my two front teeth from the bottom have turned grey. There translucent becuase when i put them against my bottom set of teeth or put anything behind them they show the colour through. I dont smoke and have always brushed my teeth. Also, my teeth are abit coloured, theyre rather yellow and i feel really uncomfortable. I got told to use baking soda, but dont know if i should use it with my toothpaste. Should i or how should i use it and why are my teeth grey from the bottom?
A. I would not recommend using baking soda as this has no advantages. I would recommend just using normal toothpaste, but this will not do anything for the colour of your teeth.
I woudl recommemnd you visit a dentist to carry out an examination and diagnose the problem.

Q. Hi I had a filling placed in my left fang tooth up front.. i had a filling there before for 13 years and it was fine and nevre botherd me.. but I got it replaced. After the filling I have had sensitivtiy.. which I know is normal. But there is one small spot that is sensitive when I push with my nail or scratch with my nail.. what could this be? Would a high spot cause this?
A. Hi
very hard to say what the cause would be. I would recommend you see the dentist who carried out the filling to see if everything is ok.

Q. Dear Dr Bohara I am 20 years old, nearly 21. My problem is my upper front two teeth overlap each other and has caused one to stick out as it is covering half of the other tooth. As you know at this age not having braces would be prefered. Could i take on the 6 month smile plan? Thank you
A. Hi
6 months smiles treatment is white braces. Other options of straightening the teeth are invisalign which is less noticable.

Q. My dentist has taken wax up of existing teeth. He says my next appnt. is to remove old crowns and fit temps. Does this mean I have no control over how they look. Shouldn’t I see them first to see if I like them and be able to have a certain amount of control of how the permanents will look. I don’t want to end up paying a fortune when I don’t know what the outcome will be like. And what shade will the temps be. I haven’t had a shading taken. What if I end upwith huge white teeth like jodi marsh . I always thought the temps were what the permanents would looke like. Wouldn’t it be better to jig the temps about to my liking before removing any of my old ones. Your expert answer please.
A. Hi
The whole point of having a wax up done is partly to get your approval of the final restorations. Once the temps are placed then these should be considered a trial of your final restorations. Adjustments can be made to the temps, within reason, if the patient wishes and then this can be copied for the technician to copy.
