Are dental veneers as strong and lasting as normal teeth ?

Q. Dear Dr. Patel, Even though I am not in the UK I hope you will find the time to answer my question. I am considering veneers for my front teeth as they are discoloured due to childhood tetracycline treatment. Additionally, my teeth are frequently affected by cavities and appear not to be too “strong”. will veneers have the same binding and lasting properties on such teeth as they would have on regular teeth?

A. Dear N
Porcelain Veneers can last a very long time provided they are well looked after and maintained. Before you embarked on any cosmetic dentistry your dentist will ensure your teeth are decay free by carrying out an examination. With tetracyline staining to get a better result ask your dentist to use a “pressed ceramic” as these are better at masking out the staining. The lifespan of your veneers is dependant on how strong /healthy your teeth are, how much tooth surface has to be removed for your veneers, regular dental and hygienist visits and how well you care for your veneers.
I hope this helps
