More than one thousand people received free dental treatment at the Mission of Mercy clinic in Mississippi.

The clinic, which took place over the last weekend of April at the Clyde Muse Center at Hinds Community College Rankin Campus, was the second Mission of Mercy clinic to be hosted by the Mississippi Dental Association. The event was staffed by volunteer dentists and faculty members and students from the School of Dentistry at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Over the course of the 2-day event, 1,200 patients received free dental treatment. The clinic was aimed at people on low incomes, the uninsured and those who have not seen a dentist for a long time because they cannot afford treatment.

Dr W Mark Donald, former president of the Mississippi Dental Association, said that many adults are using the money they have to pay for their children’s dental care, which has lead to a decline in standards of oral health among adults. The cost of dental treatment makes it inaccessible for many and free clinics all over the USA are becoming increasingly popular.

Dr Donald was behind plans for the first clinic, which took place in July 2011 and he was eager to repeat the success of the first clinic and help more people.

As well as providing hundreds of people with free treatment, the clinic also provided a valuable training opportunity for dental students at the University of Mississippi.
