A dental project, which aims to improve standards of oral health among children in Hull, has been praised by one of the UK’s most influential dentists.

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, visited the Francis Askew Primary School to learn about the Brush Bus project. The Brush Bus is an initiative run by City Health Care Partnership in Anlaby Road in partnership with Henry Schein.

The project has expanded considerably since it was established and now involves more than 7,000 children. Under the initiative, children are encouraged to brush their teeth on a daily basis and they also learn about oral hygiene and oral health issues, such as healthy eating.

Dr Carter said that he “absolutely endorses” the Brush Bus programme and suggested that it should be rolled out across other areas of the UK. Dr Carter said that the scheme was innovative and the children were enthusiastic about brushing their teeth and learning about oral health.

Children keep their toothbrushes in a bus-shaped container and they brush their teeth under supervision at school; they are also taught about oral hygiene and they have routine dental check-ups twice a year for two years under the scheme.

Ten year old Courtney James said that her teeth were much cleaner than they used to be and she no longer experiences toothache, which she had on a regular basis last year. Maisie Whiteside, a year 5 pupil, said that it was fun to brush your teeth at school with everyone else.

Since 2011, rates of decay have fallen dramatically and this is largely due to the Brush Bus scheme.
