Cosmetic Dental Procedures Review Following PIP Breast Implant Scandal

The British Dental Association (BDA) and General Dental Council (GDC) are set to provide evidence of correct cosmetic dental procedure practice to the Department of Health.

Teeth whitening, Botox and dermal fillers are to be included in the review following the PIP scandal when thousands of women were provided with faulty breast implants, proving to be detrimental to their health. The aforementioned will be the treatments of particular focus, however other treatments such as dental implants may also be reviewed.

NHS medical Director, Professor Bruce Keogh will be leading the review and shall investigate into whether the correct regulations are in place. Professor Keogh aims to make sure that patients are provided with the correct information during pre-treatment and after-care.

Chair of the BDA’s executive committee, Martin Fallowfield has stated that dental practices have responded well to the demands of cosmetic dentistry and that the BDA supports the need for the regulations and will provide a full response to the consultation.

Recommendations are to be provided to the government around March 2013, in a bid to protect thousands of patients who choose to go ahead with cosmetic treatments.

Professor Keogh summarised the need for the review by saying that he wants to hear views from both patients and dentists regarding cosmetic interventions so that he can see which works best for both. He said that many do not realise the seriousness of receiving cosmetic treatments and must be properly informed before they finally choose to go ahead with it.
