Portman Dental Care acquires Wakefield practices

Portman Dental Care has added a dual-practice business based in Wakefield to its growing portfolio.

The group, which is based in Cheltenham, has bought St Michael’s Dental Practice and St Michael’s Orthodontics. The practices boast nine surgeries, which provide a mixture of NHS and private dental services.

The previous owners of the Wakefield business, Dr Joe Hendron and Dr Catherine McCanny, bought St Michael’s Dental Practice in 1922. At the time it was a two-surgery practice. In 1997, the practice relocated to its current base. St Michael’s Orthodontics launched in 2010.

The duo decided to sell the business as they are approaching retirement age. The orthodontic practice no longer has an NHS contract and there is scope for developing the private side of the practice, particularly services for teens and adults, which are increasingly sought-after.

Joe and Catherine said that they wanted to sell to a company that would “retain the legacy of putting patients’ interests at the heart” of the practice.

The acquisition was overseen by Christie & Co. The pair thanked Jonathan and Olivia for their support during the sales process. Olivia Allison, senior business agent- dental, said that Joe and Catherine had created an “amazing business over the years” and added that there was a lot of interest in the practice despite challenges in the dental sector.

The practices were sold for an undisclosed fee. Portman Dental Care now has over 200 practices around the UK.
