A dentist who posted a video on TikTok encouraging followers to brush their teeth before breakfast has notched up over a million views.

Dentist, Anna Peterson, has gone viral after suggesting that it’s better for your teeth to clean them before breakfast. Anna used a TikTok video to explain why it’s beneficial to brush before eating, providing information about what happens to the teeth after eating.

Most people brush their teeth after breakfast but Anna claims that changing the daily cleaning routine could bring benefits for oral health. When we eat, bacteria in the mouth feed, which causes them to produce acids that temporarily weaken the enamel. It takes time for the enamel to recover.

Brushing straight after eating means cleaning the teeth while the enamel is vulnerable. By brushing before eating, it’s possible to protect the enamel and reduce the risk of acid erosion and sensitivity.

Anna also said that brushing before eating protects the teeth from the foods that are about to be consumed, reducing the risk of oral health problems, such as decay.

Anna’s video sparked a huge reaction, with thousands of people commenting that they had never heard of brushing before breakfast and others saying that they were going to alter their brushing regime immediately.

Some people also remarked that they had thought they were “weird” because they brushed before breakfast and their friends didn’t.

TikTok has been criticised by dentists in the past, with dangerous crazes encouraging people to try DIY treatments like home whitening, but Anna’s post shows that it can also be a useful platform for spreading positive messages.
