Denplan Poll Reveals Alarming Oral Health Habits in the South East

A poll carried out by Denplan has revealed alarming oral hygiene habits in the South East of England.

A survey involving more than 2,000 parents of children aged between 2 and 11 years old showed that a fifth of children have gone longer than a day without brushing their teeth. 15 percent went for two or more days without brushing their teeth. The statistics are worrying, especially as dentists suggest we should clean our teeth twice daily.

Three quarters of parents also admitted that their children do not brush for the recommended two minutes and only 59 percent said their child’s oral health regime was good.

In response to the findings, Denplan’s chief dental officer Roger Matthews said that while many parents have good intentions, a large proportion of children are not cleaning their teeth effectively. This is contributing to high rates of decay. Mr Matthews recommends supervised brushing and setting a timer to make sure children brush for two minutes each time. Experts also advise parents to check nutrition labels to find out the sugar content of foods and drinks. Many products, including those marketed as healthy alternatives, also contain added or hidden sugars.
