Jersey Dentist Celebrates Prestigious MBE

A retired dentist from Jersey is all smiles after learning that he has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Dr Paul Liddiard, who worked in Worksop for many years before moving to Jersey, has been awarded the prestigious honour in recognition of his commitment to providing first class standards of dental care in the UK and beyond. During his long career, Dr Liddiard, who is now 76 years old, spent a lot of time volunteering abroad, providing much-needed dental care to the poor.

Over the years, Dr Liddiard and his late wife Sally, a nurse, gave up their time to help those in need. Dr Liddiard has visited Nepal, the Amazon Rainforest, Peru, Romania and Bolivia. After the tsunami struck Thailand in 2004, he visited Phuket a number of times. He also provided assistance in the Ukraine last year following the MH17 disaster.

Speaking about the award, Dr Liddiard said that it had been “a bolt out of the blue” and was “completely unexpected.” He is thrilled that his work has been recognised and hopes that he will inspire other health professionals to use their skills to help those in need across the world.

Dr Liddiard’s last trip with Sally was to the Annapurna trek in Nepal. The couple had taken dental supplies with them, but realised just how great the demand for treatment was and how lucky we are in the UK to have access to emergency dental and medical care, which is free at the point of contact. In Nepal, very few people can afford to see a dentist, let alone access emergency care.
